Summer isn’t quite here, and whilst some domestic borders may still be shut, living in Australia means that we have an abundance of beautiful beaches to hit once restrictions are eased.
We’ll all still need to maintain social distancing so it’s a matter of finding those hidden beaches without the crowds. Here are just a few of the best secret beaches around Australia to help you get off the beaten track and explore the stunning secret stretches that our country offers. Just remember to stay sun safe, pack your supplies, and don’t forget your Carroten products!
New South Wales
Castle Rock is known as a stunning beach destination, but surrounded by national park it feels like a secluded retreat. Accessible by a walking track, you can take time to walk the Spit to Manly track, and stop in at the Grotto Point Lighthouse for more stunning scenery.
Mungo Beach is a dramatic, beautiful beach that stretches for 20 km, only accessible by 4WD which is sure to keep numbers to a minimum. The area offers hiking tracks, swimming, and impressive dunes, with enough space to find your own spot or really put your 4WD through its paces.
Garie Beach. Located an hour outside of Sydney, you can fish, swim, surf, and even spot whales on a good day. Make the most of the sun and the facilities by bringing a picnic, and relax in the rainforest when it’s time to seek some shade.
Congwong has a beautiful setting, a rich history and even boasts a fort, built in 1880. The beach itself is a big sandy stretch with some rocks, and is a favourite destination for scuba divers and snorkellers.
Tasmania
Tinderbox beach is only a 30 minute drive from Hobart, located on a small peninsula. In addition to swimming, sailing and long days on the sand, Tinderbox beach has an underwater marine reserve for nature lovers to experience.
Friendly Beaches can be found within Freycinet National Park, and offer a pristine getaway with perfect views and plenty of space to stretch out. With a lagoon at each end and a long stretch of perfect white beach in between, you can feel secluded in paradise.
Lime Bay doesn’t just offer a lovely beachside camping spot – it has plenty of Australian convict history on offer as well. Explore the ruins of Saltwater River Convict Station and the limestone rocks that frame the beach, while making the most of the perfect views and lovely setting.
Ocean Beach is a secluded beach on Tasmania’s west coast, providing 40 km of wild sandy shore stretching out with nothing between you and the eastern coast of South America but the rolling waves. Not the ideal location for a swim, it is perfect for sand boarding on the dunes, long isolated walks along the shore, and experiencing some untamed nature.
Queensland
Yarroomba is often passed over in favour of Maroochydore or Noosa, making it a great escape away from the usual Sunshine Coast crowds. Trees block the road, so you can feel like you’re in a private getaway while staying close to the amenities.
Bilinga on the Gold Coast is close to the airport and secluded enough to guarantee you your own patch of sand. Beautiful white beaches with clear water and access to the local attractions – it’s the perfect spot to relax for a few hours or to spend the whole day.
Tallebudgera Creek is more than just a creek – it’s a beautiful sandy retreat with gentle water that’s perfect for a picnic or some outdoor fun. The Palm Beach side can get more crowded but offers a patrolled swimming area, so you can choose seclusion or safety depending on how you plan to spend your day.
Western Australia
Bennion Beach is located in northern Perth, and is often passed over by beach-goers for other surrounding areas. It’s absolutely worth a visit though – in addition to the relative peace, you’ll get a picturesque beach with big limestone clusters and beautiful waters to swim or snorkel to your heart’s content.
Point Ann offers an incredibly unique view – at the right season (June to October) you can see Southern Right Whales coming in to calve in the waters. Even out of season, it’s a lovely secluded spot at any time.
Lucky Bay is located in the Cape Le Grand National Park, and combines an incredible 15 km walking track with beachside camping and stunning sea scenery. The nearby Thistle Cove is even more secluded on the very unlikely chance there are too many people for your liking.
Victoria
Killarney Beach is not too far from Port Fairy, and offers great fishing, camping, and just generally beautiful views. The offshore reef makes it a calm spot, so it’s perfect for a family trip with kids.
Golden Beach is just one of many beautiful spots along the stretch known a Ninety Mile Beach – 145km of golden sand and dazzlingly blue surf. While almost any spot will do, Golden Beach offers particularly good fishing and access to wildlife.
Kitty Miller Bay is a great choice for the wild at heart. Located on the South-Western side of Phillip Island, with an extinct volcano, rugged beach and even a shipwreck visible at low tide. Perfect for beachcombing and relaxing.
South Australia
Memory Cove is perfect for a family getaway, with vehicle access limited you can be sure it won’t be overrun. The beach boasts five campsites right on the beach, which are extremely affordable if you can snag one. Great fishing, stunning scenery and peaceful seclusion – perfect.
Maslin Beach is known as being Australia’s first official nude beach, but there are plenty of other areas if you’d prefer to keep your clothes on. Walk along the stunning cliffs or grab a snorkel and check out the incredible marine life.
